Policosanol is a dietary supplement made of medium-chain alcohols extracted from sugar cane wax. Long-chain fatty alcohols (LCFAs) derived from sugar cane have a wide health benefits and used as nutraceuticals or dietary supplements. Policosanols are a mixture of Long chain fatty alcohols mainly Dotriacontanol, Heptacosanol, Hexacosanol, Nonacosanol, Octacosanal, Tetracosanol, Tetracosanol, Tetratriacontanol, Tetratriacontanol, Triacontanol. Various studies have shown that the plant wases influence healthy lipid metabolism. Policosanol has several other health benefits and it is used for food and beverages.

Policosanol is found in sugar cane waste, in leaves of alfalfa, in wheat, and is also present in wheat germ. The major component, octacosanol is present at levels of 60% in material obtained from sugar cane only.
Policosanol reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol oxidation, platelet aggregation, endothelial damage, and smooth muscle cell proliferation. It also inhibits cholesterol synthesis in the liver and enhances cholesterol degradation. Although it decreases platelet aggregation, policosanol does not change coagulation time. It is safe when taken appropriately for up to 2 years. Other names for policosanal include Octocosanol, 1-Octocosanol, N-Octacosanol, and Octacosyl Alcohol.
